Operators are trained on the specific plant type, maintain log books covering flow, dosing, blower and pump running hours and effluent observations, and escalate deviations rather than absorbing them. An STP left unattended between visits is the most common reason a plant that was commissioned correctly stops meeting its numbers.

Yes. BFM maintains the operating log books, sampling and testing schedule, and effluent test records in the format the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board expects, so the file is ready when an inspection or a consent renewal comes round rather than reconstructed afterwards. Where testing is done by an approved external laboratory, BFM coordinates the sampling and holds the reports with the operating record.

Resident operator deployment is priced per person per shift per month, inclusive of wages, statutory contributions and supervision. Visit-based maintenance is priced on frequency and the scope of work per visit. Consumables — chemicals, dosing media — and sludge disposal are handled separately, either at actuals or as a defined allowance. Plant capacity, technology type and the number of shifts to be covered are what determine the figure.

In practice, four things: inconsistent operation, so the biological process never stabilises; dosing that is skipped or guessed rather than measured; blowers, pumps or diffusers that have degraded without anyone recording the change; and sludge that is not removed on schedule, which progressively reduces effective capacity. All four are operational rather than structural, which is why a plant that met its numbers at commissioning can fail an inspection two years later without anything having broken.

Sludge handling is scheduled as part of the operating routine, and removal and disposal are arranged through authorised handlers with the documentation retained in the compliance file. Disposal is billed separately because volume varies with load. Deferring sludge removal is one of the more expensive economies available to a facility team: capacity falls, effluent quality drops, and the plant then needs remedial work as well as the removal that was postponed.

Yes, and it is a common starting point. BFM surveys the plant, tests the effluent, reviews the operating records where they exist, and reports what is operational and correctable against what needs mechanical repair or replacement — before quoting an operating contract. Taking on a failing plant under a routine contract without that assessment simply transfers the problem, so the assessment is done first and priced as its own piece of work.
